Life Update: Sailing the British Virgin Islands (Part 2)
In our last update, I shared the beginning of our journey. Now, it’s time to dive into the heart of our adventure aboard a Bali Cat Space catamaran.
Navigating as a Two-Person Team
Two weeks ago, my husband Kevin and I embarked on a sailing adventure through the British Virgin Islands. Kevin captained the boat while I took on the role of first mate—hoisting sails, managing the mainsheet, and learning a whole new vocabulary of nautical terms! Sailing a catamaran is definitely a multi-person job; the timing and precision required to catch the wind are intense but rewarding.

The Beauty of Guana Island
We spent three days anchored at Guana Island, an 850-acre private paradise. Known as one of the few truly “virgin” islands, it’s a sanctuary for flamingos and lush tropical flora. While there is a small resort there, we enjoyed the freedom of our boat, paddleboarding in crystal-clear waters, and soaking in the untouched landscape. As a food blogger, I was particularly inspired by their commitment to farm-to-table dining, sourcing ingredients from their own sustainable gardens.

Lessons from the Sailing Community
As newbies, we quickly learned that the sailing community is incredibly supportive. We had a few “learning moments,” including a dinghy that went adrift in a strong current and a mooring buoy rope tangle that required a neighbor’s snorkeling gear to fix. These experiences reminded me of the importance of “paying it forward”—a philosophy that applies just as much in the kitchen as it does on the open sea.

Summer Style & Fitness
Between sails, I’ve been focusing on my upper body strength. While hiking is my first love for cardio, I’ve realized that maintaining muscle as we age requires targeted strength work for the arms and abs. Check out a few of my favorite swimsuits from the trip below—which one do you think suits the Caribbean vibe best?

Frequently Asked Questions
1. Are these recipes suitable for meal prep? Absolutely! The Mexican Ground Beef and the various Salmon recipes are excellent for preparing in advance. The salads are also great, though I recommend keeping the dressing separate until you are ready to serve to maintain crispness.
2. Can I substitute the fish in the trout recipe? Yes. If trout isn’t available, salmon or even a firm white fish like halibut works perfectly with the garlic lemon butter sauce.
3. What is Guana Island exactly? Guana Island is a privately owned island in the BVI. It is mostly a nature preserve with a small, high-end resort. It is famous for its biodiversity and for being one of the most “unspoiled” places in the Caribbean.
